Ni Howdy! An American Woman's (Mal)Adaptation to Life in the People's Republic of China by Desi Downey.

The author of this book has been quoted as saying:
"I like to think of my book, Ni Howdy! An American Woman's (Mal)Adaptation to Life in the People's Republic of China,as a comedy of errors: mine. It is the story of an uprooted American wife (me) trying to adjust to life in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. There was the problem of the language (not speaking it), the food (a vegetarian constantly battling the 'all foreigners are rich so they must eat meat' syndrome), the squatty potty (my spoiled American thighs being too weak to squat), the noise (there are just sooooo many people over there), the screeching Sichuan Opera (I'm a 60s rock kind of a girl), the smells (Sichuan), trying not to crash into something or, more aptly, trying to prevent something from crashing into me, like a bus, when riding (translation:  trying not to fall off of) my bicycle, the…well, I’m sure you get the idea."

If you loved Foreign Babes in Beijing, if you loved China, Inc., if you are moving to China to live, work or play, or just going to China for fun, you have got to read this book! If you want to know about culture shock China, this is the best little book about China ever!  Those other books, they don't tell you what you really need to know to live, work or play inside the People's Republic of China, but this book, Ni Howdy! An American Woman's (Mal)Adaptation to Life in the People's Republic of China, does!  This book even comes with a simple glossary at the back to help you with that nasty little communication problem.

From the Publisher: Ni Howdy! is Downey's nitty-gritty, down-to-earth, and hilarious account of how she triumphed over the trials and tribulations of becoming accustomed to daily life in a foreign country. From the horror of her first encounter with the primitive "squatty potty" to the difficulties of grocery shopping, Downey paints a vivid and humorous picture of her experiences.

With no-holds-barred candid wit, Downey writes frankly about herself, her fellow expatriates, and the Chinese people, zeroing in on both the differences and similarities of two vastly different cultures. Dispelling all those old stereotypical myths about East vs. West, Ni Howdy! brings two incredibly diverse cultures together with laughter and heartwarming anecdotes.

01/20/06 -  5 Stars from Eileen Burnham:  Great Book!! While reading this entertaining story of the author's experiences in China, I couldn't help but think of my Chinese friends. I've told them about her adventures and they can't wait to read the book too! I look forward to more stories from this author!
11/14/05 - 5 Stars from Carol Frees, avid reader: Easy reading, informative and funny.  I loved this book. Ms. Downey has related her experiences in China in a humorous and informative way. I couldn't wait to see what each new chapter held in store. I hope she writes more about her China life or just life in general. Five stars plus.

10/07/05  - 5 Stars from Emily Jensen, armchair traveler: Ni Howdy is a delightful encounter of the author's experience living in third world China. It was an understatement when the lady in the elevator told her she was very brave to be going. I would have run screaming back to the good old USA the first day. I look forward to her next books telling her encounters of being thrown into a whole new culture. I hope that I will only have to ever read about such an experience, if I ever am thrust into another civilization I hope I can do it with the same great sense of humor!!!!

07/05/05 - 5 Stars from Joyce (Librarian), surrounded by books and love it!
This book is nothing but electricity. You have to share with the author her experiences in China. It is totally crazy. You can almost feel like you are in every situation she is describing. Whether you like fiction or non fiction you must buy this book and read. It will be a new experience you will not forget. I highly recommend Ni Howdy!
